Building Tiriti-Centric Learning and Teaching Practices.

Ki te kotahi te kākaho, ka whati; Ki te kāpuia, e kore e whati.

When we stand alone we are vulnerable, but together we are unbreakable.

    PHIL GORDON (Ngāti Maru)

Abstract: As Educationalists how do we create an understanding of what it means to be a successful Treaty Partner through a bi-cultural framework? Looking at how this can be enacted within our multicultural environments and how we can connect expectations in this space to our Registered Teacher Criteria (RTC’s).

A practical example of how Tiriti-Centric thinking can be manifested into a gradate profile will be shared by Vikki Rihari of Birdwood School.

Having the strength to uphold the kaupapa, and to keep it alive!

A facilitated conversation with members of the MAC facilitation team, joined by Te Pitau Mātauranga Hoana Pearson QSM, will begin by unpacking the meaning of Mauri before discussing the responsibility of keeping this well and alive in our kura so all of our tamariki can thrive.

Strategies to grow, implement and ensure sustainability of your new learning will be shared, relating back to the MAC framework Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori.

Kia taurite te rite, kia tupu te mauri.

Waitangi Wānanga FAQs

  • Kāo, at this stage we will only be hosting one Waitangi Wānanga. We suggest registering sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

  • Our day will commence at 8:45am on the Wednesday and we will be finished by 1:00pm on the Friday.

  • Our Waitangi Wānanga is held Te Tai Tokerau. The conference base will be the Copthorne Hotel and Resort in Paihia.

1 Tau Henare Drive, Paihia, Te Tai Tokerau

  • This three day wānanga is a complete experience, therefore we will not be offering single day registrations.

  • Āe, please book your accommodation as soon as possible.

There are plenty of options at Paihia, which is only a 2 min drive from the Waitangi Copthorne and Treaty Grounds. The Copthorne in Waitangi itself is be available to book. If you stay in Paihia and are happy to walk it would only be a 15 min walk.

You can find our recommendations for accommodation HERE.

  • We encourage you to bring as many members of your staff/BoT/school whānau as you like - knowledge shared is better than knowledge kept.

These wānanga are capped at 200 attendees each so best to register early to ensure your place.

  • Āe, dinner on the Thursday evening is included in your registration.

  • Item If flying into Kerikeri Airport:

Transfers : There are transfers available from Kerikeri Airport that you can book but if there are a few of you in your group you might find it cheaper to rent a car for the few days. It also gives you a little more flexibility in where you book your accommodation. We are hoping to have a few minivans available to us but we can’t confirm that as yet.

    Flying into Tāmaki Makaurau Airport:

The other consideration is perhaps flying to Tāmaki and renting a car from there - it might be cheaper than paying for connecting flights for 3 or 4 people to Kerikeri plus airport transfers to Waitangi. It is about a 4 hour drive from Tāmaki Makaurau to Paihia; however, it is a very easy drive.

  • Of course, in the case where a registered person is unable to attend the Waitangi Wānanga 2025 the name on the reregistration is able to be amended. Please email kiaora@tearahouoaotearoa.org.nz with any registration changes.

In this email please include the order number, the name of the person who is unable to attend along with the the updated name, role of attendee, email address and dietary requirements who will attend in their place.

  • Cancellations MUST be notified in writing to the National Wānanga events team by emailing kiaora@tearahouoaotearoa.org.nz.

Please allow up to 5 business days to process your refund request. It can then take up to 10 business days for the refunded amount to appear on the credit card the registration was paid from.  If the event is rescheduled, all purchases will be honoured for the rescheduled event date or may be refunded in full.

We will not allow any cancelled registrations to be substituted for another wānanga or any other Te Arahou resource.

    Refund Request Dates:

Requests received between 9 December 2024 - 24 February 2025 will be refunded less 30% of the paid registration amount plus a $30 non-refundable transaction fee per registration.

Requests received after 25 February will be considered on a case by case basis, if accepted these will incur a $30 non-refundable transaction fee per registration. The amount refunded will be at the discretion of the National Wānanga organisers.

There will be no refunds for any booked delegate who does not attend on the day.

If you wish to request a refund please email kiaora@tearahouoaotearoa.org.nz outlining your reason.

  • Delegates are encouraged to take out personal travel and medical insurance which includes loss or damage of personal possessions, including loss of registration and accommodation fees through cancellation.
