Hīkoi ā Whenua – Māori Art Walking Tour of Kirikiriroa
For those who prefer to stay grounded, this land-based hīkoi offers a rich and reflective journey through the heart of Kirikiriroa.
Led by Les Tuteao of Te Ahurei Māori Tourism, this 1.5-hour hīkoi begins near the Novotel Tainui Hotel and follows a gently sloping path toward the Waikato Museum. Along the way, participants will pause at various pou (carved pillars) and cultural features, learning about the Tainui iwi who once lived and thrived in this area.
The tour includes a stop for morning tea, offering a chance to rest and connect over shared kōrero.
The journey continues at Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery with a 1.5-hour guided museum experience, led by a knowledgeable staff member or historian, providing deeper insight into the region’s rich Māori history and artistic expression.
Participants will also enjoy a lunch break during the day before being free to explore Kirikiriroa at their leisure for the remainder of the afternoon.
