Te Whare Tapu o Te Ngākau Māori is a framework developed to support the growth of a new education system that acknowledges all people as ākonga (learners). It is premised on the Marae as the bastion of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga and the many journeys it requires through a process to develop an understanding of Te Ao Māori and therefore a bicultural worldview.
Throughout the history of the education system in Aotearoa Māori have felt the intentional absence of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga. Ākonga Māori (Māori learners) have been subjected to education that does not value the way in which Māori view the world and her people. Over the past 170 years of western education, Māori have consistently found themselves at the base of western expectations. The teaching of Aotearoa’s children has been discriminatory and biased and has ensured the plan of colonisation and assimilation has continued in pedagogy still evident today.
This resource is for educators of willing learners. It contains a pathway to realising each individual's unique contribution to a bicultural society with Mana Orite at the heart of engagement. Te Whare Tapu o Te Ngākau Māori is a journey through the inherent concepts of Te Ao Māori realised through developing an understanding of Ngākau Māori (a Māori Heart).
If we do not develop a Ngākau Māori in each of our ākonga we rob our nation of a bright and better future where Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti thrive in a mutual understanding of each other's worlds.
Te Whare Tapu o Te Ngākau Māori is a taonga of Te Arahou o Aotearoa - Māori Achievement Collaborative. The intent of this pukapuka is to offer an educational framework that kura can use to develop localised marau (curricula) that align with the intentions of Te Mataiaho (NZC) whilst being bespoke to the unique identities and priorities of Mana Whenua.

Māmā and Me is a beautifully written read-aloud narrative by Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward that draws on emotion and connection to support rich, meaningful oral literacy. Centred on the relationship between a mokopuna and their grandmother, the story is designed to resonate deeply with readers and listeners alike.
This taonga supports the ākonga journey through Te Huarahi Ako (Learning Journey), exploring each Ngākau in a culturally grounded, emotive way. It encourages deeper thinking and a shift toward a more wairua-based perspective, acknowledging that Te Ao Māori is a wairua world.
Māmā and Me is illustrated not with pictures, but through your imagination, allowing the readers to visualise the story in their own way and express themselves on the pages of this pukapuka. Each telling becomes personal, unique, and meaningful.
Māmā and Me can be adapted to suit different audiences, inviting every listener to step into the story and see themselves as the mokopuna, and to claim Māmā as their own. By teaching the tikanga and kawa around whāngai (adoption within Te Ao Māori), this story becomes a shared experience for all.
Use this resource, along with the power of imagination, to bring life and context to the Te Marae Wharenui of Te Whare Tapu o Te Ngākau Māori.
We recommend that each kaiako has an original copy of Māmā and Me in their classroom to share and work on with their ākonaga.

Honour the sacred essence of this rich and beautiful kaupapa. Be grounded, find time for reflection, create a sense of hauora mauri ora for you, your classroom, kura and community through karakia.
This guide has been created to accompany you on your journey through Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori. The collection of karakia, gifted by Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward to Te Arahou o Aotearoa - MAC, relate to each stage of the kaupapa and your huarahi ako (learning journey).
Each karakia within this pukapuka honours the sacred essence of our kaupapa, serving as a companion for reflection, grounding, and mauri ora in your classroom, kura and community.
Karakia are not merely words, they are living connections to atua, taiao, and the flow of time (Inamata ki Onamata ki Anamata – past, present, future). They guide us through states of tapu to noa, fostering spiritual well-being and resilience, much like prayer does across many traditions.
Accompanied by the Unpacking Karakia document, this resource extends your learning and understanding. Drawing from the kōrero of Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward, with additional insights from Anaru Morgan and the Te Arahou – MAC whānau, it provides interpretative layers to explore the multiple meanings of the karakia.
Recognising that no single interpretation can capture the full depth of these expressions, this guide serves as a thoughtful starting point for reflection and dialogue. It helps us connect with our whakapapa, atua, and the living world, honouring both Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti perspectives.
A valuable resource for ākonga, educators, and those working with Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori kaupapa.

As ākonga pass through our tomokanga, they enter through a portal into Te Ao Māori. The wharenui is intrinsically links to our identity as tangata whenua and the parts of the wharenui are representative of the deep learning and development of Ngākau Māori (A Māori Heart).
The construction of our wharenui can be done in conjunction with the script provided with references to our MAC framework Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori, along with a copy of Māmā and Me.
The parts of the wharenui model are labelled with ingoa māori, as well as labels for each area of learning in relation to your MAC Huarahi Ako.
