Te Marae Modelhas been produced to support ākonga to better visualise their Huarahi Ako (Learning Journey). Embellished with our Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori artwork, nā Regan Balzer, this 3D interactive model has been created to support our ākonga to better visualise their Huarahi Ako (Learning Journey) with Te Arahou o Aotearoa - MAC.
As ākonga pass through our tomokanga, they enter through a portal into Te Ao Māori. The wharenui intrinsically links to our identity as tangata whenua and the parts of the wharenui are representative of the deep learning and development of Ngākau Māori (a Māori Heart).
The construction of our wharenui can be done in conjunction with the script provided with references to our MAC framework, Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Māori, along with a copy of our pukapuka Māmā and Me.
The parts of the wharenui model are labelled with ingoa Māori, as well as labels for each area of learning in relation to your MAC Huarahi Ako.
Māmā and Me is a beautifully written read-aloud narrative by Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward that draws on emotion and connection to support rich, meaningful oral literacy. Centred on the relationship between a mokopuna and their grandmother, the story is designed to resonate deeply with readers and listeners alike.
This taonga supports the ākonga journey through Te Huarahi Ako (Learning Journey), exploring each Ngākau in a culturally grounded, emotive way. It encourages deeper thinking and a shift toward a more wairua-based perspective, acknowledging that Te Ao Māori is a wairua world.
Māmā and Me is illustrated not with pictures, but through your imagination, allowing the readers to visualise the story in their own way and express themselves on the pages of this pukapuka. Each telling becomes personal, unique, and meaningful.
Māmā and Me can be adapted to suit different audiences, inviting every listener to step into the story and see themselves as the mokopuna, and to claim Māmā as their own. By teaching the tikanga and kawa around whāngai (adoption within Te Ao Māori), this story becomes a shared experience for all.
Use this resource, along with the power of imagination, to bring life and context to the Te Marae Model of Te Whare Tapu o Te Ngākau Māori.
