Waitangi, Te Tai Tokerau

When the spring of Taumārere is low, the spring in Hokianga is high, when the spring in Hokianga is low, the spring in Taumārere is high. The Octopus stretches from its source to the lofty mountains of the sacred house of Nga Puhi. Come to Tau Rangatira, come to Waitangi. The call of Waimirirangi extends to you all, gather upon me, to the tides of the east and west, arise.

This wānanga is a powerful journey of reflection, learning, and growth. Kia kaha – it’s an experience not to be missed!

Building Tiriti-centric learning and teaching practices is a way for us to honor the spirit and vision of the Tiriti by creating educational spaces that respect and elevate the voices and perspectives of Māori. This approach encourages us to be more mindful, inclusive, and reflective of Aotearoa's bicultural heritage, ensuring that our educational environment respects and integrates Māori perspectives, histories, and knowledge. My time at Waitangi reinforced my commitment to these practices and inspired me to continue fostering learning experiences that embody the principles of partnership, protection, and participation central to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.”

It has been the best PD ever. I just wish I could convey the mauri to my BOT so they can truly understand the benefits of attending such an amazing wānanga. Loved how everything ran to time, the breaks in between, times to korero with our professionals, the whole wairua of the event.

Understanding and perceiving the world through a Māori lens is vital for fostering a more inclusive and respectful society. A Māori perspective brings a holistic approach to whakapapa, taiao and the hapori, encouraging us to appreciate the interconnectedness of people and place. It challenges us to rethink our assumptions and to view issues and opportunities from a perspective that values collective well-being and ancestral knowledge. This experience reminded me of the importance of integrating these insights into my daily life and work, so we can create spaces where Māori voices, perspectives, and values are honored and upheld.
